Goth Culture

Sorry but black can’t be your favorite colour

As a painter/ printmaker / illustrator I pay much attention to colors. Actually I use many colors in my illustration works and pretty less in personal work. However I sorry to tell you that you can’t say black is your favorite color. What? Wait ? I’m gothic ! I adoooore black color !!! Is she crazy ?No I’m not… Most of the time. It’s SCIENCE ! Black is a non color, black is just an absence of color.

Take  Black holes, one of the great mystery of space ( and time? Sorry I’m whovian ). It’s a supermassive celestial object …totally black.

Black holes reflect no light nor they emit it. Black doesn’t physically exist because you can see it. Yes, you and me are black blind.

So why see you black ? How you can choose this beautiful velvet black dress if it’s made in a non color ? You see it for several reasons:

– first you see black by contrast with other colors around. It’s like a shadow, and all here know that goth love shadows, you agree I guess. Without other colors you can’t see black, you just will see nothing. Distinguish nothing, something like nothing …. Remember the Neverending Story ( i’m an elder goth, i have old references ) If you didn’t see it or read it, do, just for the black / nothing

– in second hand, actually true black didn’t exist. I know it’s fucking choking. The black you see is still a deep color absorbing more or less light. It’s for that reason that some blacks don’t match when you wear its. Some are greenish or slightly blue, reddish or so…

Recently Anish Kapoor, a contemporary artist bought all rights on VantaBlack which is the darkest material ever made, absorbing 99,96% of light.

In conclusion you like colors, but very deep, yeaah !

My favorite colors is purple. Since my young age, purple fascinating me. And you, after reading this blog, which is your favorite color ?

Vampires movies goth should watch : Part 2

Hi shadows,

Last week i’ve posted a list of vampires movies, i think goth should watch. of course it’s not a condition for being goth to my eyes, it’s just a title which sounds nice to my ears. However, here the second part of the list and even non goth could watch its 😉 Hope you perhaps discover movies you don’t know in the list.

1) Interview with the Vampire, Neil Jordan, 1994

I remember very well when i go to cinema to watch it with friends. I was a baby bat and my friends was involved in roleplaying La Camarilla about vampires. We were very excited and all of us knew the Anne Rice’s book series. It’s one of the few movies in which i can stand Tom Cruise. He is a very good Lestat. Brad pitt is less good as Louis but honorable. If you like historic  costumes movies, sexy vampire relationship and Anne Rice’s book, it’s for you.

2) Morse, Thomas Alfredson, 2008

Morse is a vampire movie based on kids but not for kids like The Little Vampire. This swedish movie based on a book depict the special relationship between two kids. It’s a beautiful movie which explore through vampire topic, kid’s torments and how some build a deep connection.

There was a remake in 2010, but i don’t watch it till now.

3) Twixt, FF Coppola, 2012

twist is a part of those very personnal movies Coppola realised. It’s a mix of several inspirztions and topics. It’s also a tribute to edgar Allan Poe universe. For me it’s a real gothic movie and Elle Fanning is brilliant. I just czn tell you : WATCH IT !

4) Thirst, Park Chan Wook, 2009

For once a corean movie. The story is a strange mix between a french realist book, Therese Raquin, and a classic vampire movie. The principal character is a priest, and just for that i wanted watch it, long story, who is infected by a vaccine test. The aesthetic is interesting and the film is more a thriller than a horror movie.

5) Vampyr, Carl Theodor Dreyer, 1932

this movie is a beautiful expressionist one. For once it was not after Dracula but after Sheridan Le Fanu Carmilla book. I must admit that i love 20s / 30s movies aesthetic so i enjoyed almost all movies from this era !

6) The Last Man on Earth, Ubaldo Ragona, 1964

this adapatation of one of my favorite book I Am Legend written by Richard Mattheson is not perfect but much better that the one with Will Smith few years ago. And if your not conviced, watch it for Vincent Price, still perfect. His character live alone and must face night attacks.

7) Dracula, Tod Browning, 1931

I don’t know one goth who don’t know who is Bela Lugosi, the best known Dracula actor of the past century. I must confess if i like the movie it’s not my favorite even it’s a classical one. From Browning i prefer so much Freaks. However, you need to watch it, just for your culture and because it has installed long time vampire stereotypical picture.

8)Vampire’s kiss, Robert Bierman, 1989

I like this movie, which is more a comedy, because it uses a different point of view on what could be to become a Vampire. It was one of the first movies which explore vampire psychology. Nicolas Cage did a great job.

9) Only Lovers Left Alive, Jim Jarmush, 2013

this film take another point of view on vampires : the disillusioned ones. The movie is mot the best ever on vampires but it’s worth for the actors, Swinton and Hiddleston, and for the still classy Jarmush’s photography.  And Hiddleston, oh i guess i say that before ;))

10) The Fearless Vampire Killers, Roman Polanski, 1967

Another classics but in comedy. This movie is a reinterpretation of Van Helsing, the vampire hunter of Dracula, story.  It’s funny and light. Perfect for halloween with friends for example.

Next week i will publish the last chapter of my list. Feel free to add in comments movies you like and which are not here nor im the part one.
