Birthday super day: shamanic drums and singing bowl

Hi shadows,

After the party with family today was birthday day. I hate big parties, full of people with whom you don’t have the time to talk. I prefer being with people i love and talk, share, laugh and feel good together.

We were lucky, the weather was perfect. With my man, his son and my best friend we’ve gone in woods for doing some magick. We’re both interested by old pagan pratices, sprirituality and roots. We share a lot of things on this topics.

My man and I are shamanic drum player. Shamanic drums are the horse of the shaman, which does the link between worlds. It’s a fantastic way to develop your sensibility and being open to worlds. It’s also a great thing for relaxing and meditate. My best friend is using tibetan singing bowl in the same way. It was the very first time we played together and it was really enchanting with the sun on our skin, the wind blowing around us, the overlook on the valley bellow us, the birds freshly out for spring.

Tambours shamaniques

I’ve painted my drum. A lot of shamans, especially in Samis ( Lapland) tribes are painting their drums with their own symbols. I do mine having this in spirit.

After playing we walk through the woods for showing a special rock to my best friend. Legends says that around Berchta is guiding innocent souls to the Valhalla. It measures 9 m.

We finished the day with a restaurant. It was really an awesome birthday.

Cheers

Outfit of the day: Birthday with family

Hi Shadows,

Today i’m turning 43. I’m into goth since 25 years ! So much things happened and time flies so fast. This evening we did the family party and tomorrow it will be just with my man, his son and my best friend. We will play shamanic drums in the woods on the top of a nice hill above the valley. Promise, i will post about shamanic drums practice and why i’m practicing.

Well, back to this evening.

Simple and comfy. I wore my witchy winkelpickers from Goth Pikes.

Laced legging from Poizen Industries

Here a close up, i love the fishnet through which you can see my tattoos. I have another one laced up on leg sides.

Velvet and cotton embroidered top by Holy Clothing my favorite brand

Bat necklace by Restyle and altered by me, other necklaces from Ebay, sleeveless cardigan from Bershka.

Wolf head hair clip from Bloody Frills

I never use white foundation, my skin is pale by nature and frankly i never really understand why so white face ? I will have the feeling to be a sad clown. It’s one of the stereotypes i don’t need. When i was a baby bat i don’t remember people with white face make up.

What do you think, am i wrong ?

Cheers !

Tattoo appointment report

Hi little ghosts,

last week i had a tattoo appointment with my favorite tattoo artist, Leanka from Lucky Electric. She did an amazing work. Most of my tattos are from her hand. I trust her completely. I think the relationship between you and your tattoo artist is VERY important. Even for one little tat’

i will do a more complete post about tattoos, being tattooed and how to do or not do when you want a tattoo.

My new tattoo was for my leg, a large snake , from foot to thigh between my other tats. When it’s a place like legs or arm you need to think how you dress for being confortable during the work and after especially if have something else to do before being back home.

I choose one of my comfy dress from Holyclothing. I wore over knee socks, no battle with shitty thights and one of my comfy pikes

Ready for my rendezvous ! I’m still a little bit nervous before a tattoo because you never know which pain you will have. Especially with a big one which begins on foot and continue alongside your leg.

i took a photo during the appointment but i deleted it last evening while i cleaned my photo feed. Well it’s not very important actually.

Here is the snake. I think it took 3 or 4 hours. Don’t remember because we still talk and laugh a lot. Time flew fast. My tattoos are not “goth” , i like old school coloured tattoos and some tattoo artists close to lowbrow or outsider art style. I must confess that i’m not into usual goth art with  etheral girls/ bats / wolves/ roses/ cemeteries kitsch combo. I will talk about that in another post too !

the photo was taken the evening after my appointment. I will shoot it better when it’s healed. Next step will probably be the snake on my left leg, same size, same place but not same snake: i want the sand snake from Beetlejuice. He is a little bit more simple with his stripes, with less colors. The third and last steps will be finishing colors and correct lines on both.

Have you tattoos ? Do you want tattoos ?

Cheers !

Vampires movies goth should watch : Part 2

Hi shadows,

Last week i’ve posted a list of vampires movies, i think goth should watch. of course it’s not a condition for being goth to my eyes, it’s just a title which sounds nice to my ears. However, here the second part of the list and even non goth could watch its 😉 Hope you perhaps discover movies you don’t know in the list.

1) Interview with the Vampire, Neil Jordan, 1994

I remember very well when i go to cinema to watch it with friends. I was a baby bat and my friends was involved in roleplaying La Camarilla about vampires. We were very excited and all of us knew the Anne Rice’s book series. It’s one of the few movies in which i can stand Tom Cruise. He is a very good Lestat. Brad pitt is less good as Louis but honorable. If you like historic  costumes movies, sexy vampire relationship and Anne Rice’s book, it’s for you.

2) Morse, Thomas Alfredson, 2008

Morse is a vampire movie based on kids but not for kids like The Little Vampire. This swedish movie based on a book depict the special relationship between two kids. It’s a beautiful movie which explore through vampire topic, kid’s torments and how some build a deep connection.

There was a remake in 2010, but i don’t watch it till now.

3) Twixt, FF Coppola, 2012

twist is a part of those very personnal movies Coppola realised. It’s a mix of several inspirztions and topics. It’s also a tribute to edgar Allan Poe universe. For me it’s a real gothic movie and Elle Fanning is brilliant. I just czn tell you : WATCH IT !

4) Thirst, Park Chan Wook, 2009

For once a corean movie. The story is a strange mix between a french realist book, Therese Raquin, and a classic vampire movie. The principal character is a priest, and just for that i wanted watch it, long story, who is infected by a vaccine test. The aesthetic is interesting and the film is more a thriller than a horror movie.

5) Vampyr, Carl Theodor Dreyer, 1932

this movie is a beautiful expressionist one. For once it was not after Dracula but after Sheridan Le Fanu Carmilla book. I must admit that i love 20s / 30s movies aesthetic so i enjoyed almost all movies from this era !

6) The Last Man on Earth, Ubaldo Ragona, 1964

this adapatation of one of my favorite book I Am Legend written by Richard Mattheson is not perfect but much better that the one with Will Smith few years ago. And if your not conviced, watch it for Vincent Price, still perfect. His character live alone and must face night attacks.

7) Dracula, Tod Browning, 1931

I don’t know one goth who don’t know who is Bela Lugosi, the best known Dracula actor of the past century. I must confess if i like the movie it’s not my favorite even it’s a classical one. From Browning i prefer so much Freaks. However, you need to watch it, just for your culture and because it has installed long time vampire stereotypical picture.

8)Vampire’s kiss, Robert Bierman, 1989

I like this movie, which is more a comedy, because it uses a different point of view on what could be to become a Vampire. It was one of the first movies which explore vampire psychology. Nicolas Cage did a great job.

9) Only Lovers Left Alive, Jim Jarmush, 2013

this film take another point of view on vampires : the disillusioned ones. The movie is mot the best ever on vampires but it’s worth for the actors, Swinton and Hiddleston, and for the still classy Jarmush’s photography.  And Hiddleston, oh i guess i say that before ;))

10) The Fearless Vampire Killers, Roman Polanski, 1967

Another classics but in comedy. This movie is a reinterpretation of Van Helsing, the vampire hunter of Dracula, story.  It’s funny and light. Perfect for halloween with friends for example.

Next week i will publish the last chapter of my list. Feel free to add in comments movies you like and which are not here nor im the part one.

WINKLEPICKERS addiction

Winklepickers are the iconic shoes of goth culture. By the way, those shoes was worn first during the 50s by both sex and rock’n’roll lovers. They are inspired by medieval french boots called poulaines. You can find a lot of winklepickers style even with heels. You can call also call them Spikes.

When i was a baby bat during the 90s we called them “witches” and my dream was to have a pairs but i hadn’t the money to afford its. I was very frustrated. Now i catches my frustration.

I have seven pairs ! I wore pikes everyday out of my artist studio. When winter come i add furry thermal sole inside in the way to protect my feet.

5 pairs come from The Gothic Shoes Compagny in UK

2 pairs come from Goth Pikes in Germany

Both shops craft very good products. Both are small compagnies, and as an artist i prefer support small brands like people can support my small business. Let me present you my collection:

This pairs come from GOTHIC SHOES UK. It was my first one. They have straps with nice bat buckles. They are very strong and i wore it for long walk in cities by bad weather for exemple. It’s my “work” boots. There is painting on one. They are so comfy !

The second pair i bought are this one, very simple, laced through d-rings. They are very comfy too. I wore it a lot, you can easily quickly put its on your feet. With my pagan dresses it’s just awesome. They came from the Gothic Shoes UK.

Those are a birthday gift. They are perfect for warm weather and the ankle buckles are beautiful. I wore it also for exhibition opening or classy events i must go. From Gothic Shoes UK

I just fall in love for those boots from Gothic Shoes UK. I love the delicate details of the leather work. They give my feet a goth folk look. They are almost knee high.

i found those ones on ebay for very few bucks. They are from Goth Shoes UK too. Simple style with zip. The material is soft. And keep all cat hair around ah ah ah.

The first pair i bought from GOTH Pikes Germany. I love the multiple straps and their high. I wore them for gigs, festival or parties.

My last pair, from Goth Pikes. It’s their new style and i’m weak, i bought them. Very easy to wear for all occasion, with dress, with leggings, with mini skirt…. If you search a pair you can wear even at work i think those one could be the right choice.

If you want affordable pikes some big brands like ASOS, Zara released pikes inspired shoes and boots. You can also be patient and find a good occasion on ebay for example.

When the rainbow meets the darkness: LGBTQ and Goth relationship

I’m involved in LGBTQ rights activism since mid 90s, in the same time i became involved in goth subculture too.
First I became an activist after met some wonderful friends in University. We were very close. The second thing is that many people think i’m trans. I’m not, i’m a cis girl. The fact that people think i’m trans is not a problem for me but i discovered the violence against trans people. And this violence is often through words but could easily become a physical violence.
As a cis girl I know really this bad side but my transgender friends are facing so much more:  administration, doctors and too much often alone, without family support.
Family support is hard to have too when you’re queer, gay or lesbian too. It’s a shame, for me, that your own family let you alone because you are not what they want. A kid, a brother, a sister, a father, a mother are not just object you fulfill with your wishes, the more important is their wishes and how they need to live for being happy.

However, back to the relationship between LGBTQ community and Goth community. after my own experience goth seems more inclusive. Perhaps our interests, our culture and our proper experience of being different help us to understand more minorities.
I had friends who found with Goth places where they can be theyself. One can live free her desire to be male to female. She was just at the beginning of her transition and at goth parties she can wore dresses she love. I remember she came as a normal boy and change her clothes, make up and attire in the bathroom of the place we’ve done parties. With time she became more confident with the support of the community and finally came to parties as the girl she is. That’s an awesome example of support in our community.

Caligo Bastet, Openly gay goth youtuber, link in the bottom of the post.

Same for gay ou lesbian couples. Some were build through parties of course but you have also secret couples. You know when you come for the first time i’m a place, you don’t know how will be the reactions. Often, slowly couples became more and more free because we were supportive and don’t care who you love or who you are deeply.
But, there’s always a but, in goth scene you also have douchebags. Especially into industrial music ( yes i know, indus is not goth, but frankly seriously related to ). I’m agree, with industrial you have a part of far right ideas which stink a lot. I’ve heard, but it’s not fact checked, that some bands like Combichrist or VNV nation has some homophobic shit behind them.
If you read this, especially baby bats, and you’re straight stay supportive and inclusive. You know too what is judgmental attitude, so be kind, don’t mess with people nature when this one will never hurt you. If you have, perhaps because of your education or whatever, some reluctance, try too push your limits. If not, you will perhaps loose a good friendship. Just open your mind. Rainbow could meet the darkness in a beautiful way !

OUTFIT OF THE DAY: sunday between work and cinema ( and slice of controversy )

My sunday was divided between work and going to cinema for watching Logan. I’m not usually into comics but i follow the X-Men licensed movies since the beginning. Of course like a lot of people, my favorite character is Logan / Wolverine ( but also Nightcrawler and Magneto )

I loved the movie and i think it becomes my favorite of all the licence. The character of Logan is really well written, with deep and sensibility. I also discovered Dafne Keen who is really amazing in her role of young savage mutant. She reminds me a character from another universe i love Orphan Black, the character of Helena even she is older.

However let’s talk rag.

It’s a comfy sunday, first because i’m waiting total healing of a big snake tattooed ( i will talk about my tattoos soon in few different posts ) on my right leg on friday and in second hand because i need to work in my art studio before go to cinema.

Earring cuff: Shop Dixi

goth finger

It’s late, my humor is fucking bad at this hour.

CONTROVERSY parenthesis : This week i will post the second part of ” Vampire movies Goth should watch “. I had a weird discussion about my first part on a elder goth FB group. Someone said to me she don’t want read because i used “should” in the title. Well, okay it’s your opinion and i don’t care i said. But she came back, explain to me that she think goth is an non judgemental subculture ( by the way not sure ) and she’s worry when people give things you should do….

If i use this title it’s not for giving an order or a manual about being a good goth. First because the list is not only for goth, but for those who like vampires movies, second because it’s just a fucking title which sounds nice to my ears, and not for the first degree, third, it’s just suggestions if you are searching a movie to watch during a lazy day or because you’ve binge drinked netflix and have no idea to watch now.

I do this blog for pleasure, for not only talk about my job because i’m like my own community manager and sometimes i need to talk about other stuff i like. It’s for fun, sometimes i will post more serious things of course, but it will never be a manual for being goth. You can read it even if you are not in the subculture but you have common interest, or whatever you are, i don’t care. I just hope you.ll find sometimes interesting infos or you just have a good time like me when i read other blogs i appreciate. And not especially goth too.

So please can we just forget for once controversies, i think there are plenty of more important topics on which you can have controversies than … a list about vampire movies !!!!

What do you think ?

Make up goals: Cleopatra Style

The last week was terrible. I’ve waited a very stressful appointment in hospital for my degenerative heart defect. I had several long tachycardias due to my stress which is not good for my heart health.

However, during those shitty tachycardias hours, when I didn’t sleep I scroll Pinterest and and particularly make up.

I love make up very much. I love especially eye make up.

My favorite inspiration came from Egypt / 60s/ trad goth 80s and I have a pretty usual routine. Now, I want try some new things.

 I show you my selection.

Those make up will be great for quick daily routine. I really love oriental eyes with kajal.  I love the shape of the first one, but i need training ah ah !

Here, make up for day and for parties the Horus eye which is amazing. I don’t like the turquoise and I think I will replace it by purple. I like long lines and points.  I work my own make more like this with a white touch. I will show you my daily routine.

The last is More post punk than trad goth but my favorite, opening eye like a manga girl. It’s a look from 1982, wore by Diane Lane in “Ladies and Gentlemen, the fabulous Stains ” movie. I really need to try, perhaps for a gig or a party.

What are your make up goals ?

How package your jewelry for a trip

Hi bats,
My full time job is artist. In this way i usually travel a lot through France but also in Germany, Switzerland or Belgium. Like every trad goth a love BIG jewelleries, BIG and A LOT !

So one big question for me, I guess for goth ( and probably non goth people) is packaging well my jewelry ( after choosing during hours which necklaces, which earrings i take with me of course )
I took with me a lot of stuff for all occasions: exhibition opening, exhibition days, lazy days, travel days…. I love chain things and if I pack all together I will find a terrible node bag.
If you experiment the same problems this is my solution. It’s not really glamour but very practical: pack carefully each necklace, bracelet, choker in a small plastic bag. I use small plastic bag for aliments fridge storage. And you can easily re use its from travel to travel

It’s just perfect and now I can put all my mess in my bathroom bag even when i use my caravan ( generally from march to october ).

Hope you find this useful and perhaps you have other kind of tips ?

Vampires Movies Goth should know: part 1

Since my young age i’m a huge fan of vampires. I will try to list vampire movies which seems important to know when you are into goth and vampire.

1) The Hunger
Probably the GOTHIEST because Bauhaus opened the titles with Bela Lugosi is dead. The trio Bowie/ Deneuve / Sarandon is just perfect.
The movie was the major inspiration of AHS: Hotel ( even in the soundtrack )

img_1658

2) Near Dark

This movie gave a modern image of vampires. And it’s a woman who realised it: Kathryn Bigelow. Some scenes will inspires some Buffy scenes especially the introduction of Spike for those who’ve seen the series.

IMG_1659
3) The Lost Boys

Okay it’s more a teen movie but very much better than Twilight. The vampire group is literally post punk in their looks. It’s one of my favorite Kieffer Sutherland role as Vampire leader. It was very refreshing in the 80s to watch a goth modern vampire tale.

4) Coppola’s Dracula

Holy chuck, this movie made me crazy and totally in love for Gary Oldman. He is the best ever Dracula to my eyes. It’s strictly subjective of course.
The movie depict very nicely the victorian era and Winona Ryder was a perfect Mina Harker.
Plus the soundtrack which is really good !

5) 6) Nosferatu

there is actually two Nosferatu movies and both are very good. The first was filmed by Murnau and it’s a jewel of german expressionism ( 1922) ( like almost all Murnau movies). The second one is from Werner Herzog in the late 70s. It’s also a beautiful movie to watch, pictures and atmosphere are very gothy.
Try to watch both.

7) The Wisdom Of The Crocodile

Not a lot of people know this movie but to my advice it’s a beautiful and different point of view on vampires. The movie maker is Po-Chi Leong. Steven Grlscz is the principal character and one of the best role of Jude Law ( with Pius XIII in Young Pope )

8) The Addiction

Another revamped vampire myth by Abel Ferrara. Like the precedent one, not a lot of people have seen it. The movies, from middle 90s is in black and white, with an interesting photography. One of my favorite actress, Lily Taylor, play the main role. It’s about vampirism but also addiction we can all have.

9) The Reflecting Skin

This one has nothing to do with Twilight but it’s a weird and precious cinema jewel, so underated. The director is Philip Ridley who made only three long movies. The story take place in the rural 50s USA seen by a seven years old kid with a violent father. Vampires took a special place and never we can separate what is real and what the kid imagine. Photography is just beautiful. This movie impacted me a lot.

10) Buffy

The movie written by Joss Whedon before he did the cult eponymous series. Of course it’s not serious as some other movies of the list, but i love it because it’s the prequel of the series and explain why Buffy is Buffy. It’s fun, light and perfect for a pop corn evening.

So here ends the first part of the Vampire movies Goth should know.
Hope you discovered some movies and hope i give you the curiosity to watch them.
To be continued…
